History remembered in photographical essay of the 1927 tornado
Last Wednesday April 12th marked the 90th anniversary of the devastating Rocksprings Tornado. The Edwards County Historical Committee came together and added another historical moment to our county history as they presented a program for the public commemorating the event. Held in the Rocksprings ISD Auditorium, the audio-visual program portrayed this community in the past, the time of destruction and then the rebuilding of the town until present time.
Kari Cloudt, County Historical Committee Chair, recalled our county’s beginning, life as it was when the tornado struck, description of the destruction and then the progress made to rebuild. Names of the known deceased, some 74 persons, were read. RHS students Jaime Palacio and Alexis Samora read several personal recorded accounts of that horrific night. Some of those stories told of constant wind, ice falling in jagged sheets through ceilings, the sounds of crying and pain in the darkness and so much more.
