RISD students serve community through Teen Tech Tutor Time
The “digital natives” are assisting “digital immigrants” in learning how to use technology through the Teen Tech Tutor Time program at the Gilmer Memorial Library. Back in August, several patrons asked for help with technology. Some patrons just wanted help with basic skills like how to use the computer and Internet. Other patrons wanted help with social media sites to enjoy seeing their grandchildren and keep up with family. Several patrons had purchased new phones or products and needed assistance learning how to use these new devices. There were even some requests from patrons to learn or increase proficiency in computer programs like Excel. We discussed this as a library staff; it quickly became apparent that there was a need for a program that met these needs within our community. After talking with other RISD staff, we knew that forming a student group that would become responsible for this community service task was a worthwhile endeavor.
