Maw’s Laws by Windmill Willy

- I can’t even get close to naming half of what I learned from my mother’s influence in my life, but on the lighter side, I do remember a few. Things like an egg spatula can bring on as much fear as any switch and soap can have more uses than cleaning.
Maybe one of my earliest lessons would be that muddy shoes are far better left outside than walked on a clean floor. Chewing gum is a lot better in the mouth than in my sister’s hair. Toad frogs are happier outside than under the bed. No matter how hard you try, armadillos just don’t make good house pets. Cats look much more natural with their whiskers left long than cut short with forbidden scissors. Crayola looks better on paper than the wall. BB guns should never be aimed at anything you don’t want to shoot even if my sister’s backside did make an attractive target. Rocks never go straight unless you are throwing them at something you shouldn’t hit, like my sister’s front tooth. Photos are better left untouched even if my sister’s boyfriend did look better with a goatee. And probably the most important law which can only be learned from experience, no matter how fast and far you run, you must come home before dark.
Without a doubt I gave my poor mother many a reason to wear the switch out on me, and while I can’t say she chose to spare the rod, I didn’t get near as many as I had coming.
Here’s to the mothers that care enough to try to teach their children right from wrong all the while of being a soft shoulder to cry on.
Happy Mother’s Day!
