Tuesday's Internet Edition, 11:56 PM, March 09, 2010. By Lee Sweeten, G.M. Real Edwards Conservation & Reclamation District
As many of you know, the 4th Court of Appeals recently ruled in the District’s favor regarding the lawsuit over the Riding River Ranch Permit. The District will be glad to put this behind us and remains hopeful that we can work with everyone on the numerous groundwater issues that need to be addressed. We have been working diligently with our consultants (LBG-Guyton) to obtain data to determine the Desired Future Conditions for the Aquifers in our jurisdiction. We have been and continue to be an active participant in both the Regional and Groundwater Management Area planning processes. We have partnered with the United States Geological Society (USGS) on monitor wells and stream gauges, and hope to expand that partnership in the near future. There is a lot to accomplish and with everyone’s participation we feel optimistic we can accomplish all of our goals. There are still a few seats left for the Riparian Workshop that will be held at our office in Camp Wood on May 5th, 2010. If you would like information on this please contact Ms. Sky Lewey at the Nueces River Authority in Uvalde at (830) 278-6810 or email at slewey@nueces-ra.org. We are still working to identify and obtain registrations on Existing Wells (wells that were drilled prior to January 1st, 2002. Each well we obtain a registration for allows us to set aside water for that well’s current and future use and helps us work toward the Desired Future Conditions (DFCs) of the aquifers in the area. While the District urges you to register any and all wells on your property, District Rules and Chapter 36 of the State Water Code require the registration of any well that is non exempt and/or is capable of producing over 17.3 gallons per minute (above 25,000 gallons per day) regardless of when that well was drilled. If you have any questions relating to well registration or would like a well registration form, please contact our office at (830) 597-3322 or email recrd@swtexas.net. Last Saturday February 27th, about 20 people showed up to clean up two different areas along the Nueces River. About 65 bags of trash were collected and for now, the sections along the river look great. Special thanks should be given all of these people who donated their Saturday to cleaning up other peoples’ litter and to Ms. Betty McFatter who helped put this program together and to Two Fat Boys BBQ who donated to this project. As always, if you would like additional information on any of the topics discussed in this article or of other District activities, please feel free to contact us. Remember Conservation begins with You. |
