This year’s catalog was a memorial dedication to Alfred “Mac” Gilliat. FROM CATALOG Mac Gilliat - What an Impact! As the Clayton Criders said, “Everybody in Leakey would like to sing praises to Mac. He lived on our ranch for several years when he first moved here.” Sonny Sansom echoed,”He was a friend, a true livestockman and was always helping others. Mac had a great sense of humor.” As an Extension Agent, Mac worked with several families through three or four generations. “In preparation for the stock shows he was there to give all of us encouragement and treated everyone fairly. We will always remember Mac’s toothpick, his smile and support,” according to Ben Lockhart. Preston Faris had these comments: “What to say to honor a dear friend? Mac couldn’t swim a stroke and yet he might offer instruction on the proper techniques of “how to water ski.” And it is my bet that it would be accurate. He had the mind of a calculator, a 500 GB memory bank, if asked would give you his real opinion about an issue, was as honest as any man I have ever known, gave freely of his time and talent to help others big or small and left a lasting impact on the lives of many. I’m proud of the fact the he honored me with his friendship. I think of him often and miss him dearly.” Everybody appreciated Preston having the San Antonio Stock Show minister to give a special prayer for Mac this year. So many others have expressed their admiration for Mac. Eddie Holland wrote,” Everyone will always remember Mac for his pointed boots, camp bread, and cobbler. They will also remember Mac for his tireless work with the Kerrville, San Antonio, and San Angelo livestock shows, and his dedication to the 4-H Horse Show programs. I especially enjoyed working with Mac at the Hill Country, South Texas Regional, and State pecan shows. Mac spent untold hours weighing individual pecans for his Real County producers in order for them to have outstanding entries. Not many people know that the statistics in judging criteria were developed by Mac; and are still used today. Every year Mac and I would get a call from Fred asking us to help evaluate goats for his sale. Many times when we were evaluating we would see Mac roll his head, point his finger, and say, “Woo Ha! Look at that spot.” The spot would be at the top of the hip, broaden out at the base, and be a little frizzy. That jokingly became the “MAC SPOT”. So now when we are evaluating goats and see one of those spots we always think of Mac.” Vicky Cantrell, “Mac touched so many lives; he was a friend and mentor to all, the young and the young at heart. He had such knowledge of the land, agriculture and people. He forgot more than most of us ever knew. Mac enjoyed life - ranching, working livestock shows, judging Angora goats, cooking, playing bridge, telling stories and helping others. He spent many hours analyzing goats for shows and sales such as this one today. He enjoyed this task and the visits and contacts that resulted. Thank you for honoring him this way! We will forever remember his cowboy hat, toothpick, and pointed-toe boots, blue Ford pickup and one-finger wave. He was a “true gentleman” and will be forever in our hearts! Love you Mac! Vicky and Family” Carol and Robin Giles, who with many other producers and 4-H club leaders worked with Mac spoke up, “He was a special person in our industry who also had a genuine enthusiasm for the youth!” Hayden Haby said, “Mac Gilliat was the smartest, kindest, most versatile person I have had the pleasure and good fortune to know and work with for many years. Mac was competent and dependable when judging 4-H shows, pecan shows or Angora goat shows. He will certainly be missed by his many friends and the folks in Real County. He never had a bad word about anyone.” Mary Bridges (Mac’s sister) “We really appreciate the huge out pouring of love and recognition for Mac. This includes Lanny Leinweber and area neighbors rounding us and hauling Mac’s cattle to the auction recently. Mac had talked to Lanny earlier about when best to ship cattle.” Many of us will want to visit today privately with Mary and some of her family and with Vicky, We especially want to thank Vicky for sharing Mac with us at so many events over the years. Mary, your parents must have been great. They would be proud of you and Mac working with young ones in Pilot Point and Leakey. Mac will want you and your family to carry on the family tradition of being concerned for others, the land and livestock in your own way. Without saying it directly, Mac’s legacy has issued all of us a challenge. “Be consistent, persistent and work together.” Frank Craddock said it well ,”I loved him. All of us will miss Mac!” |
