City to honor Helen Fred

Helen Thurman Fred will be honored as Mayor Rachel P. Gallegos makes a special presentation which recognizes this citizen for her dedication, diligence and contributions to the City of Rocksprings at the regular meeting on January 14th at 6:30 p.m. Mrs. Fred is 85+ years young and fills her days with numerous projects and acts of kindness. She has been a member of almost every organization that was ever created including the Hospital Auxiliary, Chamber of Commerce, American Cancer Society, Edwards County Historical Commission, Cemetery Association, and the Southwest Genealogical Society. All the cemetery records and maps are a result of Mrs. Fred’s tireless dedication. A very active member of the First Baptist Church, Helen Fred chaired the Baptist Church Centennial Celebration committee in 1998 and planted many seeds as she taught Sunday School. She is one of our Old Settler’s Queens and participated in the publication of The History of Edwards County.
Mrs. Fred’s Bible Bookmark Ministry which began in the spring of 2004 has been featured in this newspaper. At the end of 2007, she had created and distributed her beautiful, colorful, crocheted bookmarks to more than 2,850 special recipients all over the country. Her plans are to continue to touch lives through this ministry in 2008.
Pastor Albert Green will be on hand at next week’s council meeting to accept the special award for Mrs. Fred and will read her letter of gratitude thanking the entire City of Rocksprings for honoring her.
