Sunday's Internet Edition, July 06, 2008.
The tanks had been abandoned for more than 70 years and were removed last year. Degradation of the tanks allowed some leakage into the surrounding soil. Soil testing, completed once the tanks were removed, showed that some of the soil was contaminated. According to regulations imposed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency, this soil must be removed and hauled to an approved disposal site. One lane closures will be in affect along Main Street near these two locations. A flagger will be in place during daylight hours and both lanes will be open during the night. Persons can expect to smell an odor of gasoline when traveling through the area. The dirt and concrete sidewalk removal process should be complete in two weeks. The areas will be backfilled with clean soil. USA Environmental and Cook Joyce, Inc. are the contractors on the job. Kiewit Texas Construction, L.P. won the bid for the three million dollar Main Street renovation project in May of 2007. Construction is expected to begin in February and take 16 months to complete. |
