Reba Whittle among veteran’s to be honored at Admiral Nimitz Museum

- By Bill R. Pierce
Friends and family members of 27 new additions to the Admiral Nimtz Museum Walk of Honor in Fredericksburg are invited to attend the dedication of commemorative brick pavers in Fredericksburg on March 8. The new brick pavers were added to 42 others in Section 15 of the Walk of Honor to show respect, thanks and honor to so many persons who served our country in many different ways from World War I to the present time.
New members being honored on March 8 include Steve Custer, Robert Woodruff, Edgar B. Gray, Donovan Miles, Ray Routh, B. J. Stewart, Jesus Enriquez, Reba Whittle, Hubert and David Whatley, John Stendebach, Ira and Bucky Welch, Lemuel Hutcherson, A. C. Bullard, Sim Brown, W. W. Webb, Jack Hibbitts, Tom Gass, Jr., John and Charles Pierce, Kevin Chastain, Leo Lacey, Jr., and Arthur Creech.
Of special interest is the story of Reba Whittle, an Army flight nurse from Rocksprings. Lt. Whittle was the only nurse captured and made a POW by the German Army during World War II in the European Theater. When her plane was shot down over occupied France, Reba received a head wound but none of the occupants were killed. She was repatriated after 4 months and after treatment at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, she was given leave to go home to her parents in Rocksprings. As a high school senior in April, 1945, I was able to see Lt. Reba Whittle when she got off the bus that day in Camp Wood on her way home. She must have been one very happy young woman.
Those wishing to have lunch can meet at the Friedhelm Restaurant (US 290 W at the Y with 87) at 11:30 for an excellent German meal. Dedication of the brick pavers will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Section 15 at the Museum Walk of Honor.
Spaces have been reserved in Section 15 for others who would like to honor someone. Call 830-997-8600 for the easy system of joining. The cost is reasonable and helps the Admiral Nimitz Museum operate. Also, you will receive a very handsome certificate with the same information as entered on your brick.
