Fire Chief Willy Richards said the two fires which occurred during night hours were most likely mischief with someone setting them. A fire on Cedar Street across from Dell Smith’s house burned approximately one acre as did one on Price Street on the Sam Shanklin lot. Another fire which covered about three acres before being extinguished was off the Plant RD 2995. On the windy Tuesday, a rock saw ignited grass on the Seco Mayfield ranch burning about 20 acres. As soon as firefighters finished with that one, they were called to assist with a blaze on the Auld Ranch off HWY 83 near Garven Store. Another 20 acres was burned on Hamilton Lane. Reason was not known, but Richards suspected someone threw a cigarette out while traveling. The crew also assisted in the fires that shut down I-10 west of Kerrville last Friday. Edwards County is one of 152 counties declared to be threatened by extreme fire hazard by Governor Rick Perry. We remain in a Burn Ban which means no outside fires. |
