Main Street Project begins

- The much anticipated and long-awaited Main Street project through Rocksprings will begin March 3. All of the work which needed to be completed to prepare the streets and their subsurfaces for improvements is now finished. TxDOT and its contractors have spent months removing old gasoline tanks, contaminated soil and sidewalks along Main Street. The gasoline tanks were left from the 1920s and 1930s and had leaked following their abandonment more than 70 years ago.
Improvements such as a new concrete road surface, landscaping and storm sewer are being paid for using 80% federal and 20% state highway funds. The city of Rocksprings will maintain the trees and plants along the street once the work is finished.
Kiewit Texas Construction, L.P. won the bid for the three million dollar renovation project in May of last year. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2008.
