Monday's Internet Edition, May 12, 2008. Yelverton and Reed place second at District
The Cross-Examination (CX) Debate team of Emily Yelverton and Ryan Reed will compete at the state level on January 28, 2008. The pair advanced to state-level competition after earning second place at the CX District Meet on Monday, January 28th. An extremely challenging event, CX Debate is a contest where one pair of students faces another pair of students and debates a topic centered on policy. Each team must be prepared to argue both an affirmative and a negative case on the “topic,” also known as a “resolution.” Preparation for the event requires hours of research, as well as developing superior speaking skills. At the district meet, Yelverton and Reed faced six (6) opponents in a round-robin tournament. A veteran to CX Debate, Yelverton found herself without a partner when her previous partner moved out of the district. “I was so disappointed when Jake (my partner) moved.” Yelverton said. “I just knew I’d be unable to find a new partner, because CX is so difficult and time-consuming.” Needless to say, Yelverton was pleased when Reed accepted the challenge. “I didn’t really want to debate,” Reed said, “but Emily is my friend and I really wanted to help her out.” “We won four out of six rounds,” Yelverton said. “I’m so happy to advance to state for a second time.” “I’m excited to advance too,” Reed said, “but most of the credit should go to Emily – she’s an awesome de- bater!” Although CX Debate district contest is held prior to the main UIL Academic Meet, the points earned will be calculated in the district totals. “We’re off to a good start,” said Coach Annie Haynes. “I’m so proud of Emily and Ryan.” |
