Lawsuit filed against former Rocksprings/Camp Wood/ Leakey Catholic priest John Fiala

- Father John Fiala, a Catholic priest which served the Rocksprings, Leakey and Camp Wood parishes has been accused in a lawsuit filed last Thursday of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy at gunpoint and during private catechism sessions two years ago.
The suit, which also names outgoing Archbishop José Gomez as a defendant and claims he sought to conceal the matter, came three days after the Vatican named Gomez as the next archbishop in Los Angeles.
According to other sources, Gomez removed Fiala from the local parishes in October of 2008 and the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity of Robstown, his religious order, also removed him from his priestly ministry.
Edwards County Sheriff Don Letsinger said, “This investigation is about a year-and-a-half old, but it is complete and we’re ready for indictments. I think we have a good case.”
Letsinger said the diocese cooperated and suspended Fiala almost immediately after he called about the investigation.
A San Antonio Express News article stated, “The archdiocese said it was acting on a complaint it received in the fall of that year that involved interference with child custody.”
However, Sheriff Letsinger said that once his office begin the investigation on September 30, 2008, they begin to realize red flags were popping up which dealt with more than just child custody.
At present, Fiala’s whereabouts are unknown, but he’s thought to be living in Nebraska, his home state, an article in the Express News said. Filia has served several parishes in several states.
