Lewis Langley Wilkins was born in Kerrville, Texas, on December 25, 1936, to Lewis and Antoinette DeMauri Wilkins. He died at his home in Lubbock, Texas, on January 31st at 11:35 a.m.
Most of his early years were spent in the Texas Hill Country, especially in Junction and Rocksprings. His father served in Rocksprings as the pastor of the Presbyterian Church. He attended school in Rocksprings and later graduated from Kennedy High School, Schreiner Institute, Rhodes College and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He engaged in doctoral study in Old Testament at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, in Mainz, Germany. He completed a Doctorate of Ministry degree in Church Administration at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.
Dr. Wilkins was an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He served in a variety of ministerial positions, ranging from the local church to denominational and interdenominational organizations in this country and abroad. In the last twelve years of his life, he worked in partnership with his wife, Judy, in the Plains Institute for Organizational Consulting and Coaching. ‘Lew’ had a special passion for ecumenical and interfaith concerns. His writings focused on the life and culture of the church. His intellectual curiosity, interests and passion for life were most vividly revealed in his love for conviviality and hospitality. He was knowledgeable in many fields, read widely, cooked famously, enjoyed music of all varieties, tended to any type of bird that would visit, embraced the friends of his children and made them his own and spent many hours enjoying the magical beauty of the wide expanse of the land and sky that was his West Texas homeland.
He was an Honorably Retired member of Sierra Blanca Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and an Associate Member of Shepherd King Lutheran Church in Lubbock, Texas.
On December 27, 1992, Lew married Judy McDonald. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their four children: Alisa Cortez and her husband, Franklin of Kansas City, MO., Katrina Jansky and her husband, Ryan, of Pflugerville, TX, Timothy and his wife, Christine Wilkins of New York City, NY, Tucker McDonald of Washington, DC.; two grandchildren, Violeta and Maya Cortez of Kansas City; one brother, John Wilkins of Knoxville, TN and a host of intimate friends.
A Celebration of Life was held at Shepherd King Lutheran Church on Feb. 2nd.
Memorials may be made to Shepherd King Lutheran Church, or to Neighborhood House, 1318 Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79401.
