- Ruth Morriss
Ruth Morriss, age 94 of Mountain Home, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 in a local Kerrville nursing home.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10th at Grimes Funeral Chapels.
Graveside services were conducted at The Sunset Cemetery, Mountain Home, Texas, on Wednesday, January 11th at 2 p.m.
Born January 22, 1911, Ruth was educated in the Kerrville schools where she graduated from Tivy High School. With her two sisters, she attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene and graduated with honors with a B.A. from The University of Texas, Austin.
Ruth became an avid reader and in later life she would tell with great delight of having read Les Miserables in French while in college. Likewise, she became an accomplished horsewoman, learning to “ride the range” as a child with her father on the family ranch on the Divide in Real and Edwards counties. Enthusiasm never waned for Ruth, an adept bridge player, be it party or duplicate.
In 1934 Ruth began a teaching career at the new, one room Dietert School on the Divide with ten students. The next eight years she spent teaching in Wichita Falls.
Following the death of her father, Airs Gilmer Morriss in 1945, Ruth and her sister, Patti Beall, assumed the management of A.G. Morriss & Co., ranching with their mother in Real and Edwards Counties. They were members of The Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association where
Ruth served as the first Secretary/Treasurer of the Auxiliary and The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. Travel with Murray Cox and the Texas Farm Bureau took Ruth and Patti to many points of interest in the United States. Wonderful trips abroad with her three sisters were unique and memorable experiences.
Ruth was a member and Sunday School teacher at Trinity Baptist Church, Kerrville. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority; a Charter Member of Major James Kerr Chapter, DAR; The Alamo Mission Chapter, DRT; Ladies of the Thistle; The Colonial Dames and a Grand-daughter of UDC.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Airs Gilmer and Lily May Anderson Morriss; brothers: Thomas A. Morriss and Gilmer A. Morriss; sisters: Margaret A. Barrett and Lily May Overton. She is survived by her sister, Patti Beall Morriss of Mountain Home and Kerrville. Numerous nieces and nephews will cherish their fond memories of their dear Aunt Ruth.
The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Parsons House for their devoted care and to the Sid Peterson Hospice for their kind, attentive care.
The family invites you to send condolences to www.grimesfuneralchapels.com by selecting the “Send Condolences” link.
