- Madge Margaret Cooper Shanklin
Madge was the youngest of twelve children born to George W. and Georgia Ella Porch Cooper. She was born April 17, 1913 in Menard County, Texas. She attended the Palmer school then graduated from London. Madge taught school at Live Oak Rural school and went to summer school until she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1938 from Sul Ross College. She then taught school in Rocksprings for eight years. On June 6, 1946, she married A.P. (Buddy) Shanklin in her sister’s home in Eden, Texas. She and Buddy lived on the Shanklin ranch until his death in 1980. She then built a small home in Rocksprings and lived there with her caregiver Maria Ramirez until her death March 13, 2008 in the River Hills Nursing Home in Kerrville.
Madge was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rocksprings and a fifty year member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women teachers. Madge was an artist, a natural born teacher and kept her home and yard attractive at all times.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her six brothers: Grady, Carl, Tom, Harvy, Bud and Joe Cooper; and five sisters: Winnie Cummins, Maurene Adams, Suzy Ralston, Bonnie Schulz and Marie Grobe.
Madge is survived by Sonny Cooper, Sam Shanklin, Butch Wardlaw and wife, Ginger of Rocksprings; Less Tice and husband, Carlie of Temple; Cornelia Shanklin of Kerrville and Lillie Shanklin of Rocksprings.
Graveside services were held Monday, March 17, 2008, 2 p.m. at Rocksprings Cemetery with Rev. Lewis Allen officiating.
