Born in Ballinger, Texas on March 01, 1921 to David and Fannie Epperson Eaton, she later moved to Decatur, Texas. Upon graduation from Decatur High School in 1939, Babs pursued higher learning at Decatur Baptist College prior to graduating from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Babs was a keen observer of the natural beauty found in Nature and used her teaching skills to introduce others to the world of art, which she so dearly loved. For 17 years, she taught art in the Pampa, Texas school system. In 1960, she married Lee F. Allison of Rocksprings and became his ranching partner and helpmate. She was an active member of the Rocksprings United Methodist Church and served for many years as a Cub Scout leader and all-around mom for her son, Will, his many friends, and her eight nephews. Babs later enjoyed the role of being grandmother to her beloved granddaughters Hanna and Serena Lee Allison. Even as health problems became more of an issue in later years, Babs continued to teach others lessons by example. Her faithfulness to family and friends, as well as her belief in God never wavered. Others noted her quiet courage and determination and were encouraged. Babs was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, her two brothers, and three of her sisters. Her surviving sister, Gene Holt, resides in Cody, Wyoming. Babs will be missed by her family and friends and the many people whose lives she touched. A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church of Sonora, followed by a graveside service in Rocksprings on Sunday, October 28. The family greatly appreciates the love shown them during this difficult time and requests that friends wishing to make donations in memory of Babs send them to the Rocksprings Cemetery Association, Box 462, Rocksprings, Texas 78880, or to a worthy charity. Word Bell Sherrill, 92, of San Antonio, former longtime resident of Uvalde, died Oct. 21, 2007, in San Antonio. Sherrill was born April 4, 1915, in Rocksprings to a pioneer ranch family, Walter Word and Mary Bell Sherrill. He graduated from high school at the age of 16 and worked his way through Texas A&M, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, and received a commission in the United States Army as lieutenant. His first job after the military was as county agent in Sonora, where he met and married Joyce McGilvray. They were married 68 years before she died in 2005. They moved to San Angelo, and then to Uvalde in 1938, where Sherrill continued his work as a county agent. He quit work as an agent to ranch full time. His third career, as a Ranch Broker Realtor, began in the 1970s. Sherrill kept an office and worked every day until age 90. Many of his civic activities were associated with agriculture. He was superintendent of the Uvalde County Livestock Show for over 30 years. He was a member and director of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and a member of Texas Cattle Raisers. Sherrill was an ardent conservationist. His curiosity and love of the land and its resources were an important part of his ranching life. He is survived by one son, Word Sherrill and wife, Patty, of Boerne; two daughters, Martha Eakin and husband, Jimmy, of Hondo and Linda Sherrill Watts of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Parker officiating. An online registry can be accessed at www.rekfunerals.com.
