World War II was the focus for a February story time program for fourth through sixth graders at Gilmer Memorial Library. Ms. Kathy Johnson’s fifth grade Reading class had finished reading the wonderful historical fiction novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, an account of a young Jewish girl in Denmark under Nazi rule. The theme for the library program was “On the Home Front,” familiarizing students with conditions their grandparents may have faced in the United States. Program presenter Annie Haynes displayed a ration book from WW2, read Coming On Home Soon, by Jacqueline Woodson and excerpts from Growing Up In World War II by Judith Pinkerton Josephson. A display of historical fiction set during wartime was available for students to check out if they desired. Mrs. Haynes announced an essay contest for the students, winners to be rewarded with a certificate for pizza and a drink at Ben and Co. Scenarios common during the War were presented to the students, who then wrote a imaginary diary entry as an essay. Contest winners were sixth graders Natalie Hernandez and Zaneta Wade, fifth graders Amanda Nombrano and Terry Gearing, and fourth graders Carmelita Fajardo and Melissa Galindo.
